‘White Privilege’ in the United States

 TOPEKA, Kansas—For those who still can't grasp the concept of white privilege, or who are looking for some easy-to-understand examples of it, perhaps this list will help.
White privilege is when you can get pregnant at seventeen like Bristol Palin and everyone is quick to insist that your life and that of your family is a personal matter, and that no one has a right to judge you or your parents, because "every family has challenges," even as black and Latino families with similar "challenges" are regularly typified as irresponsible, pathological and arbiters of social decay.
White privilege is when you can call yourself a "fuckin'redneck," like Bristol Palin's boyfriend does, and talk about how if anyone messes with you, you'll "kick their fuckin' ass," and talk about how you like to "shoot shit" for fun, and still be viewed as a responsible, all-American boy (and a great son-in-law to be) rather than a thug.
White privilege is when you can attend four different colleges in six years like Sarah Palin did (one of which you basically failed out of, then returned to after making up some coursework at a community
college), and no one questions your intelligence or commitment to achievement, whereas a person of color who did this would be viewed as unfit for college, and probably someone who only got in the first
place because of affirmative action.
White privilege is when you can claim that being mayor of a town smaller than most medium-sized colleges, and then Governor of a state with about the same number of people as the lower fifth of the island of Manhattan, makes you ready to potentially be president, and people don't all piss on themselves with laughter, while being a black U.S. Senator, two-term state Senator, and constitutional law scholar, means you're "untested."
White privilege is being able to say that you support the words "under God" in the pledge of allegiance because "if it was good enough for the founding fathers, it's good enough for me," and not be
immediately disqualified from holding office--since, after all, the pledge was written in the late 1800s and the "under God" part wasn't added until the 1950s--while if you're black and believe in reading accused criminals and terrorists their rights (because the Constitution, which you used to teach at a prestigious law school, requires it), you are a dangerous and mushy liberal who isn't fit to safeguard American institutions.
White privilege is being able to be a gun enthusiast and not make people immediately scared of you.
White privilege is being able to have a husband who was a member of an extremist political party that wants your state to secede from the Union, and whose motto is "Alaska first," and no one questions your patriotism or that of your family, while if you're black and your spouse merely fails to come to a 9/11 memorial so she can be home with her kids on the first day of school, people immediately think she's being disrespectful.
White privilege is being able to make fun of community organizers and the work they do--like, among other things, fight for the right of women to vote, or for civil rights, or the 8-hour workday, or an end
to child labor--and people think you're being pithy and tough, but if you merely question the experience of a small town mayor and 18-month governor with no foreign policy expertise beyond a class she took in college and the fact that she lives close to Russia--you're somehow being mean, or even sexist.
White privilege is being able to convince white women who don't even agree with you on any substantive issue to vote for you and your running mate anyway, because suddenly your presence on the ticket has inspired confidence in these same white women, and made them give your party a "second look."
White privilege is being able to fire people who didn't support your political campaigns and not be accused of abusing your power or being a typical politician who engages in favoritism, while being black and merely knowing some folks from the old-line political machines in Chicago means you must be corrupt.
White privilege is when you can take nearly twenty-four hours to get to a hospital after beginning to leak amniotic fluid, and still be viewed as a great mom whose commitment to her children s unquestionable, and whose "next door neighbor" qualities make her ready to be VP, while if you're a black candidate for president and you let your children be interviewed for a few seconds on TV, you're
irresponsibly exploiting them.
White privilege is being able to give a 36 minute speech in which you talk about lipstick and make fun of your opponent, while laying out no substantive policy positions on any issue at all, and still manage to be considered a legitimate candidate, while a black person who gives an hour speech the week before, in which he lays out specific policy proposals on several issues, is still criticized for being too vague about what he would do if elected.
White privilege is being able to attend churches over the years whose pastors say that people who voted for John Kerry or merely criticize George W. Bush are going to hell, and that the U.S. is an explicitly
Christian nation and the job of Christians is to bring Christian theological principles into government, and who bring in speakers who say the conflict in the Middle East is God's punishment on Jews for
rejecting Jesus, and everyone can still think you're just a good church-going Christian, but if you're black and friends with a black pastor who has noted (as have Colin Powell and the U.S. Department of Defense) that terrorist attacks are often the result of U.S. foreign policy and who talks about the history of racism and its effect on black people, you're an extremist who probably hates America.
White privilege is not knowing what the Bush Doctrine is when asked by a reporter, and then people get angry at the reporter for asking you such a "trick question," while being black and merely refusing to give one-word answers to the queries of Bill O'Reilly means you're dodging the question, or trying to seem overly intellectual and nuanced.
White privilege is being able to go to a prestigious prep school, then to Yale and then Harvard Business school, and yet, still be seen as just an average guy (George W. Bush) while being black, going to a
prestigious prep school, then Occidental College, then Columbia, and then to Harvard Law, makes you "uppity," and a snob who probably looks down on regular folks.
White privilege is being able to graduate near the bottom of your college class (McCain), or graduate with a C average from Yale (W.) and that's OK, and you're cut out to be president, but if you're black
and you graduate near the top of your class from Harvard Law, you can't be trusted to make good decisions in office.
White privilege is being able to dump your first wife after she's disfigured in a car crash so you can take up with a multi-millionaire beauty queen (who you go on to call the c-word in public) and still be thought of as a man of strong family values, while if you're black and married for nearly twenty years to the same woman, your family is viewed as un-American and your gestures of affection for each other
are called "terrorist fist bumps."
White privilege is when you can develop a pain-killer addiction, having obtained your drug of choice illegally like Cindy McCain, go on to beat that addiction, and everyone praises you for being so strong,
while being a black guy who smoked pot a few times in college and never became an addict means people will wonder if perhaps you still get high, and even ask whether or not you ever sold drugs.
White privilege is being able to sing a song about bombing Iran and still be viewed as a sober and rational statesman, with the maturity to be president, while being black and suggesting that the U.S. should speak with other nations, even when we have disagreements with them, makes you "dangerously naive and immature."
White privilege is being able to say that you hate "gooks" and "will always hate them," and yet, you aren't a racist because, ya know, you were a POW so you're entitled to your hatred, while being black and insisting that black anger about racism is understandable, given the history of your country, makes you a dangerous bigot.
White privilege is being able to claim your experience as a POW has anything at all to do with your fitness for president, while being black and experiencing racism and an absent father is apparently among the "lesser adversities" faced by other politicians, as Sarah Palin
explained in her convention speech.
And finally, white privilege is the only thing that could possibly allow someone to become president when he has voted with George W. Bush 90 percent of the time, even as unemployment is skyrocketing, people are losing their homes, inflation is rising, and the U.S. is increasingly isolated from world opinion, just because a lot of white voters aren't sure about that whole "change" thing. Ya know,
it's just too vague and ill-defined, unlike, say, four more years of the same, which is very concrete and certain.
White privilege is, in short, the problem.

The Akedah and my gay life decision

 NEW YORK—With the High Holidays coming up, I thought I would offer my own Rosh Hashana drash with reference to my fellow gay men and Torah Judaism.
Many gay and lesbian Jews have argued that since God made them gay, He must certainly want them to express that sexual orientation in their family and bedroom lives. Even Steve Greenberg, who has rabbinic ordination from Yeshiva University, has made this argument. Now, I believe on most levels that God does not give people sexual orientations, but that's a subject for another column. For now, let's assume that being gay or lesbian does come 100 percent from God.
On the second day of Rosh Hashana, the Torah reading is from the book of Genesis, the story of the Akedah, or the Binding of Isaac. One of the most famous and challenging stories in the whole Hebrew Bible, it goes something like this, at least if you have my subject in mind:
God commanded Abraham to sacrifice his son, Isaac. So what did Abraham do? He did not reply, "But I'm not the kind of father who is able to sacrifice his son. Maybe you should give that mitzvah to one of the Molech-worshippers down the street. Every bone in my body resists your commandment that I sacrifice Isaac. I'm not 'oriented' toward child sacrifice. In fact, I think it's a mitzvah not to kill one's own child."
Nor: "I have no other heir. Preparing Isaac to be a Forefather is my entire life's work. You're asking me to cancel everything I thought my life was about. No!"
He didn't say that either.
Instead he replied, "Hineini," which means "Here I am," and he brought Isaac up the mountain, prepared to sacrifice him, and in the end God made it all OK.
Now, over the centuries there has been a tremendous amount of commentary, creativity, energy, and debate put toward just what the Akedah means - albeit probably never making this kind of reference to gays. There have, however, been some gay-related interpretations of this story, including a 1995 homoerotic photograph called "Akedah," which shows a shirtless man wearing tefillin and a Band-Aid, as a commentary on the AIDS crisis. A 2003 Rosh Hashana sermon by Rabbi Michael Strassfeld (of the Jewish Catalogs) at the Conservative-Reconstructionist congregation, Society for the Advancement for Judaism, said:
"The clearest place where the tradition’s voice is overruled is when we have concluded that the tradition is out of step with contemporary moral values. The values of equality, inclusiveness and pluralism then lead to creating new traditions related to women and gay people."
But for me, the story reinforces my decision nearly eight years ago to stop having same-sex relations and to eventually pursue traditional Jewish family life married to a woman.
The idea that we should avoid following one of God's mitzvot because we're not oriented that way is inconsistent with my understanding of Torah beliefs. For example I know some men who feel they're oriented toward being attracted to non-Jewish women, yet the Torah has no exception for them. Many, many men will admit they are honestly oriented toward loving and being aroused by more than one woman at a time, yet polygamy was never encouraged by Judaism, and since the 11th century it has been forbidden to Ashkenazi Jews.
Conservative activist and perennial candidate Alan Keyes got in a lot of trouble for calling lesbian Second Daughter Mary Cheney a "selfish hedonist." But the term is not so far off the mark. A person who believes in God and the Torah but overrules one of the commandments because it doesn't match his internal sexual makeup is basically saying, "It's all about me, me, me. My pleasure, my identity. Me." Judaism believes - and Abraham believed - that life is primarily about God and what God wants, not what we want.
Now, some Jews don't believe that the Torah comes from God. That's a much larger discussion. But what if my Akedah drash can convince such people that if the Torah comes from God (assuming Leviticus 18:22 means gay sex is wrong - another larger discussion), then should gay men be celibate or marry women? If it can, this essay will have done its job.

Children begin tiling Seacrest's Viterbi Wall at intergenerational barbecue

 ENCINITAS, California—At Seacrest Village Retirement Communities, one might expect to run into senior citizens. But on Sunday, September 14, they nearly were outnumbered by happy children, many of them grandchildren or great-grandchildren of the residents. The children were there to enjoy a Family Barbeque and to increase awareness of “The Viterbi Family Children’s Wall,” a tile mural.
And they were having a wonderful time. Clowns performed magic tricks, balloon twisters made hats and other creations, and other entertainers painted the children’s faces with a smile or frown or even a puzzled look.
Pam Ferris, Seacrest’s president and CEO, explained that this was part of an intergenerational program “to bring young people to this organization to show them that this is a place where people come to live.” She also stated that she wanted to show the young ones “that there was plenty of life that goes on here.”
  Families were able purchase tiles for children to paint whatever color or design they wished. Thereafter, the children picked out the space where they wanted their tile to be set on the new Viterbi wall. While my wife Marilyn and I were there, we were able to see five such tiles drying in the sun.
“The tiles will tie traditions and preserve memories in the permanent piece of art, near the Koi Pond” on the Encinitas campus, according to Melanie Huff, development coordinator for Seacrest Village.
A side benefit of the afternoon was “Jewish geography” in which strangers inquiring where each other had lived previously learned that they knew people in common. For example, Marilyn met acquaintances from her days in Springfield and Decatur, Illinois, and enjoyed catching up over
chicken and hot dog barbeque.
Pop and Jewish music vocalist Sheldon Low, who served as artist in residence over the weekend, capped the afternoon with a concert in which he sang some well-known Jewish songs while accompanying himself by guitar and joined occasionally by a drummer. Then, his “youth choir,” a group of about 10 kids recruited that afternoon, sang along with him. They were simply wonderful and captivated the audience.
“When we work together, When we live as one, When we help each other, We know we are strong,” the crowd of 250 adults and children sang. The lyrics were from the song, Hinei Mah Tov, off of Low’s album, On 1 Foot. Ferris said these lyrics are echoed in all that Seacrest as an organization strives to do every single day.

Dreamgirls soars in S.D. Musical Theatre Co. production at the San Diego Rep

 SAN DIEGO—An article in citypaper.net dated April 24-30, 2003 interviewer Steve Cohen asked Henry Krieger and Tom Eyen, who wrote the Motown-influenced words and music to “the smash musical hit “Dreamgirls”, how “two white men felt qualified to create the show. Geographic and proximity is one reason”, ” Krieger quipped. “Look, I’m Jewish. My people’s roots are in the Middle East, right next to Africa”. Beyond that, he said that the Jews and the Blacks both we were minorities who were discriminated against by mainstream Americans. “When I was growing up, Blacks and Jews had more things in common than any other ethnic group.”
In 2005 in another interview, he talked of growing up Ossining, Harrison and White Plains N.Y. and listening to Aretha and the Drifters and other Black singers. “ Lots of white people were buying Motown records. We’re from the same tribe.”
The 1981 Broadway hit came about when Eyen and Krieger got an idea to write a musical about backup singers modeled after The Supremes and The Shirelles and was inspired by the history of Motown Records. According to Krieger ‘black musicals were about singing and dancing, not about real peoples lives.’ The show opened at the Imperial Theatre on December 20th. It took home six Tony Awards and closed four years and 1,500 performances later in 1985. In 2006 it was adapted into a motion picture.
The first time I saw the show was in the early 1980s at the Music Center in Los Angeles and with Nell Carter. If I close my eyes, I can still see her on stage.
For many of you who may just have seen the movie version of Dreamgirls, The San Diego Musical Theatre Company, a relatively new organization on the San Diego scene. is concluding its tpremiere season with Dreamgirls live from stage of the San Diego Repertory Theatre in downtown San Diego. It’s very professionally done and well worth seeing.
With no less that 14 musicians in the orchestra under the musical direction of Don Le Master and with an eye for style and dazzling costumes by Jose M. Ramirez, choreography by Marvin Thornton and lighting by Jennifer Edwards, director Ron Kellum takes his talented cast of more than 24 on the same journey many believe the Supremes followed.
The lives and careers, trials and tribulations and loves and marriages of three young women from Chicago who make their way to New York in 1963 to compete in an Amateur Night at the Apollo Theatre in Harlem is documented on the stage covering a period of about ten years. It highlights important events in their musical careers as well as their personal challenges. The three girls who made their way to the Big Apple, Effie White (Stacy Frances) who was the lead along with her best friends Deena Jones and Lorrell Robinson (Natalie Wachen and Sabrina Sloan) sang a song written by Effie’s brother C.C. (Thomas Hobson) who was also acting as their chaperone. They called themselves the ‘Dreamettes’.
Naïve and starry eyed, the forged their way onto the stage of the Apollo Theatre and were the best of the talent pool singing “Move (You’re Steppin’ on My Heart)". Before they knew it however, a pushy and somewhat shady and dishonest Curtis Taylor, Jr. (Charl Brown) convinces the judges to pass over the talented women so he can use them as backup for the popular R&B star James “Thunder” Early (Tonéx), whose career he managed. Before long he persuades the girls to let him manage their careers as well. Needless to say things go from good to bad to worse to falling apart to good again before the girls, now called the “Dreams” find the courage dump Curtis and move on with their lives.
It’s truly a story of ‘Rags to Riches’ and some of the most talented young people I’ve seen in some time make this particular production come alive. You have to see and hear for yourselves the powerful voice of Stacy Frances as Effie as she blows the crowd away with her rendition of “And I’m Telling You I’m Not Going” when Curtis decides she will no longer be the lead singer of the group to finally belting out, “I’m Somebody” “Chicago/Faith In Myself” and finally “Dreamgirls” as she performs one more time with the original group in Las Vegas before they go their own ways.
Other standouts include Charl Brown (A graduate from the San Diego School of Creative Arts) as the low life manager, Deena Jones and Sabrina Sloan as the other two Dreamettes and Tonéx the multi talented R&B singer James “Thunder” Early. For a little guy, he packs a powerful voice and gives a command performance. With a strong ensemble and great music from the orchestra, Krieger’s music and Eyen’s lyrics drive the story sung a la operetta style. More than half the dialogue is sung rather than spoken. I have to say there isn’t a weak link in the entire cast of this production or a weak voice on stage. San Diego Musical Theatre has put its best foot forward and given San Diegans something to smile about. Look for their season next year as they mount “Blood Brothers”, “Dames At Sea” and “Smokey Joe’s Café”.
Some of the songs included in the show are: “I’m Looking For Something”, “Takin’ The Long Way Home”, “Cadillac Car”, “I Want You Baby”, “Dreamgirls”, “I’m Changing”, “One Night Only”, “Steppin’to the Bad Side”, “It’s All Over”, “When I First Saw You” and “Hard To Say Goodbye, My Love.” It’s no wonder that it won six Tony’s, six Drama Desk Awards, Grammy Awards for Best Cast Show Album and Best Female Performers, R&B (Jennifer Holliday- “And I’m Telling You I’m Not Going”.)
Dreamgirls will continue through Sept. 28 at the Lyceum Theatre downtown.

Commander Manny Fisher Announced that the Jewish War Veterans’ New Year’s Eve party was such a wonderful success, both socially and otherwise, that it will now be an annual affair.
On February 6th, the National Commander, Jackson J. Holtz, will visit San Diego along with other dignitaries. He will be honored at a dinner to which members of the Post are invited and later in the evening the public is invited to hear Mr. Holtz speak. You cannot afford to miss the excellent speaker. Mr. Holtz will also speak over the radio.
